The Thirst for Wholeness: Attachment, Addiction, and the Spiritual Path
Written y Christina Grof, 300 pages, published in 1994 by Harper.

Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung described the addict's craving as a "thirst for wholeness" and emphasized the importance of spiritual experience in the treatment of alcoholism; he expressed succinctly in his famous formula: Spiritus contra Spiritum.” Christina Grof, a pioneer in the transpersonal psychology movement, draws on her own spiritual journey and addictive experience to explore the issues at the very heart of that craving - the longing for spiritual identity and the yearning to know the true self.

Christina Grof provided the inspiration for an Esalen monthlong seminar and two International Transpersonal Conferences (in Eugene, OR, and Atlanta, GHA) with the title Mystical Quest, Attachment, and Addiction; this was an attempt to create a comprehensive treatment program combining the practical efficacy of the Twelve Step Programs and the theory of transpersonal psychology legitimizing spirituality.

If they are properly understood and supported, they can positive therapeutic, transformative heuristic, and even revolutionary potential.

The Stormy Search for the Self: A Guide to Personal Growth through Transformational Crisis
Written by Christina Grof and Stanislav Grof

In this revolutionary, paradigm-breaking book the Grofs argue that many conditions which are currently diagnosed as psychoses and other forms or mental disease are actually “spiritual emergencie”s or difficult stages of a positive personality transformation and spiritual opening. These psychospiritual crises are routinely labeled as psychiatric disorders and indiscriminately treated by suppressive medication and hospitalization. However, if they are correctly understood and supported, these deeply transformative states can result in emotional and psychosomatic healing and meaningful psychological and spiritual growth.

Spiritual emergency,” from Latin “emergere” = to emerge,” a term coined by Stanislav and Christina Grof, is a play on words, reflecting the ambiguous nature of this process; it suggests the element of crisis but also an opportunity to emerge, to rise to a higher level of psychological functioning and spiritual awareness.
